Alphaka Internacional S.A. was founded in 1978 by Patricia Roose, April Borda and Lucero Cilloniz. All three partners have extensive experience in the fields of design, knitwear, production, and export.
In 1989, Lucero Cilloniz won second prize for her design for an alpaca sweater in the international competition organized by the Italian Knitwear Magazine "Filato di Crosa" and Adex (the Peruvian Export Association) for "IL MAGLIONE PIU BELLO DEL MONDO". Patricia Roose was selected in 1992 by the "Acuerdo de Cartagena" to represent Peru in a forum entitled "The Most Successful Companies in Latin America".
April Borda was featured in a BBC special of The Clothes Show for her work with the hand-knitters in the poorest areas of Lima. Together they were awarded a prize from Adex as the "Most outstanding export company in the field of handmade garments."
They are presently exporting mainly to Europe and the USA. Among their clients are Peruvian Connection, Pavo Real Boutiques, Catherine Malandrino, Rachel Comey, DK Essentials, DKNY Home, Spirit of the Andes, Polo, Victoria Secret and Explora.
The machines used are principally Brother 5 gg and 3gg hand loom machines. They specialize in garments made from alpaca and pima cotton yarns, and mixes of both of these. Special detail is given to frinishings and many of the graments are also hand-embroidered.
In Alphaka's office over 50 people are employed to knit and finish the garments, process shipments, pack, label, iron, and of course to effect a very strict quality control. Over 250 hand-knitters are employed on an outworker basis. |
